Physical Science
Mr. Reisman
What is Physical Science?
Physical science is the study of matter and energy and includes
such topics as physics and chemistry. Thus the study of physical science
is an attempt to explain why a kite, or an airplane, or even a space
shuttle flies. Physical science helps explain why the sky is blue, why
rainbows appear, or why the ocean sometimes looks grey-black.
The areas which we will investigate during the school year include:
- Matter and Chemistry and...
- Forces and Energy.
Matter and Chemistry
Matter, what is it? and what can it do? Matter is anything that has
mass and takes up space. Air, rock, water and living things are made of
matter. We will investigate the properties of matter, the atomic structure
of matter and the chemical reactions of physical chemistry.
Topics will include:
*Chemical Reactions and the Periodic Table
*Acids, Bases and PH
*Metals
*Non-Metals and Metalloids
*Carbon Compounds
Forces and Energy
The interrelationships between force and energy will be investigated
within the context of machines and motion. In particular we will look at
heat, electricity, magnetism, light, sound and waves.
Topics will include:
*Force and Energy
*Work and Machines
*Motion
*Heat
*Electricity
*Magnetism
*Light
*Waves and Sound
Grading
Student evaluation will be based on:
- successful completion of individual
and group assignments
- laboratory investigations
- homework/notebook
- class participation
- tests and quizzes
