THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
Just what is the National Honor Society? NHS is an organization devoted to acknowledging high school students who have excelled in four characteristics during their time in school. These four characteristics are Character, Service, Leadership, and Scholarship.
Every school that is part of NHS has its own set of rules and standards that are laid down by advisers. These advisers are usually teachers at the school that have been selected to take on the duties of advisership in addition to their daily tasks.
In addition, each state that has schools that are part of NHS have a state board and state advisers. The job of the state advisers is to make sure that each school follows the national charter and causes no problems for the National Honor Society.
Manchester West's adviser also happens to be the state adviser. James McGeough has set a high standard for both new and current members of West's chapter of the National Honor Society.
Any student who is a candidate for NHS must have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.5 out of 4.0. Secondly, they must obtain seven recommendations from teachers and other adults outside the school. They must also fill out a form describing the service activities they've participated in. All of this paperwork is reviewed in order for the student to be accepted into NHS.
Once the student has become a member, they must retain their GPA as well as complete a service requirement during the school year.
The standards that have been put in place by our advisor have made Manchester West's chapter of NHS an organization devoted to the improvement of community, school, and self by adhering to the characteristics of Character, Service, Leadership, and Scholarship.
